| Pro Football Hall of Fame Exhibit Design |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I had already done quite a bit of work for the Pro Football Hall of Fame when MUSE account executive Norman Bleckner approached me about designing an exhibit case. Norm had some ideas about the case already, but wanted to see what I could come up with. This display had to be completed very quickly, so it would be installed in time for a special reception to be held at the Hall of Fame.
The display commemorates the Daniel F. Reeves Pioneer Award, an honor that is given for innovations made to the game of football. There was an existing display in a small area, which needed to be updated. Rather than a floor case, Norman wanted to see a case mounted on the wall, with some sort of photographic background. I took it one step further, using a stadium background, "Astroturf" floor and three-dimensional goalposts. Photos of the award winners would be mounted at varying depths in the case. A shelf would hold the actual award and the floor would hold two artifacts. |

| 1) I was given a photo of the existing exhibit. The award is not given on a yearly basis, and three more individuals had received the award since this case was created. So, there would be a total of five individuals pictured, as well as three artifacts displayed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 2) Because the Hall of Fame had already provided photos of the honorees as well as a photo of the existing display, I was able to use these elements to create a layout on the computer. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 3) After I had worked with the various elements, I was able to determine an exact size for the case, so the MUSE carpenters could build the oak shell. | 4) Photos of the honorees were sized and text was set. Color output was mounted to a substrate and trimmed with a jigsaw according to templates I provided to the shop. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 5) The Hall of Fame provided me with a photo of a Buffalo Bills game. After getting a very large scan, I went about the task of working in Photoshop to clean the scan and clone various parts of the photo. We wanted a generic stadium, so any reference to the Bills (end zone, banners, etc.) was removed. I also removed the near goalposts, since they would be replaced by a 3-D model. I also found it necessary to eliminate some referees and a few players, plus extend the near end zone. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 6) I created actual size letters in Illustrator and converted the file to DXF, which was used by a computerized saw to cut the letters. After a primer, the letters were sprayed with a metallic paint I had chosen. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 7) The various elements were placed in the case: background photo, "Astroturf" floor, honorees photos and artifact labels. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 8) The goalposts were scaled according to NFL regulation standards and matched up with the actual goalposts that had been in the foreground of the photo. Made from steel tubing, the goal posts were authentic right down to the blue padding around the support post. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 9) A clear acrylic shelf holds the actual award. Everything was fixed in place except the artifacts and glass which would be assembled on site. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
