The Film Café invites you to come see the heart-stopping
and heart warming movie from World Wide Pictures, "The
Climb" on Saturday, March 8th at 7:30 p.m. at Grace Bible
Church of Pompton Plains; located at 150 Sunset Road,
Pompton Plains, N.J. Admission is Free. Doors will open at
7:00 p.m.
Two hotshot solo climbers forge an uneasy friendship in order
to reach there ultimate summit. "The Climb" is an inspiring
illustration of courage and personal growth that is a test of wills,
character and self-sacrifice that pushes these men beyond limits.
It's a test that goes beyond the physical and delves into the
psyche of both characters and the audience.
The Climb also shares important truths about family, friendship,
and responsibility as a backdrop to a powerful, entertaining story.
The movie shows the value of working hard together, the power of
teamwork over individual glory. What an important message for
our society - and for our families - to hear!
A daring rescue just earned flamboyant Derrick Williams (Jason
George, Sunset Beach, Titans) the climb of a lifetime, but his
dream comes with an unwanted partner. "Safety man" and rock-
steady Michael Harris (Ned Vaughn, The Beach Boys, China Beach,
Courage Under Fire, Apollo 13, Hunt for Red October), doesn't hot
dog, doesn't blaze trails and rarely takes life to the edge.
Training takes a back seat to their fire-and-ice relationship. But
no mount of training can prepare this volatile team for the harsh
reality of the Chilean Andes. "The Climb" escalates into a test of
wills, character and sacrifice that pushes both men beyond limits.
Features compelling performances by Dabney Coleman
(Inspector Gadget, 9 to 5, Stuart Little, You've Got Mail, Tootsie),
Clifton Davis (Any Given Sunday, Amen!), Todd Bridges
(Diff'rent Strokes) and newcomer Kyli Santiago.
Shot in the spectacular Wasatch Mountains, the stunning
visuals, rich orchestral soundtrack and stellar cast propel this
independent, family-friendly movie into adventurous new heights
of entertainment.
The Film Café is a ministry of Grace Bible Church that exists to

through film, drama, music, friends and fellowship has been
impacting people's lives through out the Tri-State area at The Film

The Climb Director sets different tone in filming
When you watch the filming of a World Wide Pictures movie,
you know right away that it's different from most workplaces.
One obvious difference on the set of "The Climb" was the
encouragement coming from director John Schmidt. Frequently
throughout the day, he would say, "Good job," "I feel good
about that", or even, "I loved it!" And you knew he meant it, even
if he called for another "take". Schmidt explained that he tries to
provide a "a safe set" to let the actors do their best work. They
need encouragement," he explained. "Actors have this image on
the screen, but in reality, many of them are insecure."
Besides "The Climb", Schmidt has worked on several other
World Wide Pictures productions, as director of "A Vow to
Cherish" and producer of "Something to Sing About" and "Road
to Redemption". These films are always Christ-centered," he
said, "and we are making a statement for the cause of Christ.
I love working with non-Christians, having nonbelievers on my
crew and cast. We can't always see how audiences respond to
these movies, but we are touching the world through working
with non-Christians on the movies."
In the motion picture industry, Schmidt admitted his style is
unusual. Actors and crew members are "used to working a
certain way, but we have the opportunity to redefine for them
who Jesus is."
The Climb is a good vehicle to reach non-Christians, Schmidt
believes. "It's a great story about the relationship between two
men who are vastly different but both extremely determined. It's
like iron against iron, but they come to a mutual respect, and
most importantly, Derrick comes to a point where he sees Christ
lived out in Michael."
The character Michael has "an inner strength an integrity - he
doesn't wear his Christianity on his sleeve. Although he's not
constantly witnessing. Derrick knows where he stands."
Schmidt believes the film will appeal to a broad audience and
that viewers will connect with the characters. "I am privileged
beyond words to be involved with this project," he said.
Members of the cast and crew seemed to agree.
Evangelical movies have lasting rewards
John Shepherd knows that making movies with World Wide
Pictures has its own reward, not in this world but in the next.
The frequent World Wide Pictures writer and producer has his
own production company and makes commercials and secular
films in between Billy Graham projects. Those other productions,
Shepherd said, are nothing but "wood, hay and stubble,"
according to the Bible. "They're not necessarily good or bad, but
they will burn up" (see 1 Corinthians 3: 10-15)
"I know what we do through World Wide Pictures will last.
When someone writes and says, 'This [character] was me, and
this movie changed my life,' it makes the long hours and hard
work worth it,' Shepherd said.
On the Utah set of The Climb, Shepherd recalled his early
filmmaking years. Some 15 years ago, he said, "I had just
completed a horror film. I prayed about it, and I felt like that type
of movie was not the way God wanted me to use my talents."
He decided to go to seminary, but during his quarter there, he
learned of a Christian movie project. Shepherd acted in the World
Wide Pictures film "Caught" and later toured with the movie,
showing it to audiences in theaters and giving an invitation to
accept Jesus Christ.
Later, while working for a production company, he worked on
"Eye of the Storm", a World Wide Pictures movie filmed in 1993.
Since then, Shepherd has been involved in some aspect of every
major World Wide Pictures project.
While some of the cast members in World Wide's movies are
believers, that is not a requirement to work on the films. "We use
mainstream actors because we want to appeal to a mainstream
audience," Shepherd explains. "Through television and videos,
we get into people's living rooms, and we want them to
watch the movie because of its quality." Then they will hear the
message, he said.
He describes "The Climb", like all World Wide Pictures films, as
a "universal" story. "We're not trying to reach mountain climbers
with this picture," he said. "We deal in parables, like Christ did.
We tell stories that people can relate to."
"The Climb" is a movie for anyone who is looking for truth or who
is seeking better relationships and trying to make sense of life,"
Shepherd said. He hopes viewers will ask themselves, "What is
my insurmountable peak? What am I hanging on to? Who do I
need to trust with my life?"
Shepherd believes many people will find answers to those
questions after watching this film. How they respond will make
an eternal difference.
